Kelly's Show Us Your Life for this week is favorite charities. I have a couple of charities that are near and dear to my heart.
The Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation is one that is particularly important. My dad's mother, my Grandma Dot, was diagnosed with breast cancer during the last ten years or so of her life. Also, one of my good college friends and one of Kurt's co-workers were both diagnosed in their late twenties. These two girls being diagnosed really opened my eyes to the fact that breast cancer does not discriminate. It can affect anyone. While my Grandma is no longer with us (breast cancer did not take her life), my friend and Kurt's co-worker were both diagnosed early so they have very good outlooks. Each year, we participate in the Race for the Cure. Kurt's work sponsors a team, so it is a nice event to be part of.
The American Heart Association is also very important to my family. My Grandpa passed away in 1999 as a result of congestive heart failure. It was hard watching him suffer so much for the last years of his life. AHA does so much to educate and inform people about being heart healthy, something that my doctor has told me I personally need to be more aware of.
What charities are near and dear to your heart?
